Pharmacist Assistant - Oncology
Job Description:
The Pharmacist assistant assists the oncology pharmacist to manage the financial and clinical risk of contracted medical schemes and health plans by implementing the policies, protocols and formularies for reimbursement for medicines and other services related to oncology. The Pharmacist assistant will authorise treatments for oncology through the application of formularies, protocols and guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive, review and capture requests for patient enrolment on the Oncology programme.
- Receive, review and capture oncology applications for a Scheme or Health plan to specific oncology benefits with the support of the oncologist pharmacist where appropriate. Obtain outstanding clinical information and supportive documentation where required.
- Assess each application for oncology benefits according to Scheme rules that apply to medicines or other oncology services reimbursed from the various benefits available in the Scheme or Health plan.
- Suggest alternative treatments to the healthcare provider and substantiate recommended changes if requested.
- Update or amend authorisations on software programmes
- All authorisations must be performed in accordance with formularies, protocols and guidelines developed and maintained or supported by the client.
- Receive and manage incoming phone calls in a professional manner. Communicate with prescribers, dispensing pharmacists and patients as necessary.
- Provide advice or information as required by customer service or other business unit personnel with regards to answering queries about oncology authorisations or registrations.
- Record productivity and operational statistics daily
- Maintain knowledge of medicines and keep abreast with changes in treatment guidelines and with pharmaceutical products available in South Africa.
- Perform other duties as required by management
- These duties may change from time to time in response to the changing needs and circumstances associated with oncology management in the medical scheme environments
Experience and Qualifications:
- Grade 12/ Matric
- Pharmacist assistant qualification
- Current and continued valid registration with SA Pharmacy Council
- Experience in oncology management an advantage
- Experience and knowledge of the medical scheme environment an advantage
- Experience and knowledge of the Medical Schemes Act and its Regulations, particularly pertaining to PMBs and CMS guidelines an advantage

- Some prior knowledge /experience with medical scheme administration and/or managed care system.
Work Requirements:
- Willingness to work longer hours when the business needs require the oncology pharmacist assistant to do so is a requirement.
- Confidentiality of all patients' clinical information and conditions to be maintained and respected. The employee may be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
- Company intellectual property and systems may not be disclosed to external agent or organization.
- Adhere to POPI regulations and requirements.
